GA16: How to Build Community in Your Classroom

Hours: 1.5

Learn and practice several techniques and activities for building community and helping students become more engaged in class. When teachers encourage a community of learners to grow, student perseverance and motivation increase, leading to academic success.

Participants will walk away with the ability to use activities and techniques for building community in the classroom and increasing student engagement.
This project was developed as a result of the FCTL Lilly Scholarship.

Julia Maffei has taught communication skills to non-native speakers of English from around the world and of all levels of ability for over 20 years, and is in her tenth year of teaching ESOL at ACC. She is also a teacher trainer for ESOL instructors with the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas. Her research interests include student motivation and retention. Born in Los Angeles, California, she got to Texas as soon as she could, attending primary school in Aggieland, yet trading maroon for orange by earning her BFA in photography and MA in Foreign Language Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She currently lives in south Austin with her cats and boyfriend.
