GA16: Powerful Classrooms: It All Begins With the Hook

Hours: 1.5

"People learn best when information is presented in a context relevant to them. Learning should include authenticity that is related to their lives, work, or chosen educational pathways." - (Center for Community College Student Engagement, 2013)
In this workshop, participants will get hands-on with practical strategies for implementing "hooks" in the classroom. Participants are also encouraged to share and engage in discussions about how to apply “hooks” in content specific disciplines. The conversation will foster new ideas and strategies all faculty can take back to their classroom.

A participant in this workshop will walk away with:
- a deeper understanding of learner-centered psychological principles
- practical strategies and a wealth of resources for implementing hooks
- feedback for continuous improvement

Chelsea Biggerstaff is a seasoned education professional. After visiting classrooms in Japan, China, the United States and the Navajo Nation during her undergraduate career at Indiana University, she found the disparity in educational settings inexcusable. She devoted 2 years to National Service through AmeriCorps. After serving, Chelsea accepted a position at Skillpoint Alliance where she dedicated the next 3 years developing programs. As a Program Lead, Chelsea coordinated the NEXT Intermediate Job Program where she developed and facilitated professional development trainings and workshops in areas such as: Leadership, Presentation Skills, Team Skills, Task and Time Management, Communication in the Workplace, and Creative Problem Solving. In addition, Chelsea coordinated several youth STEM programs where she planned the delivery of teacher trainings with a focus on computer science in the classroom, natural sciences, making, tinkering and inventing, project-based learning and the incorporation of the humanities and rapid prototyping. Chelsea’s background in education and passion for closing the achievement gap drew her to Austin Community College. Currently, Chelsea is a Faculty Development Coordinator where she is using her creativity, educational background and positive spirit to inspire and learn from the hardworking faculty at ACC.
