GA16: May the Force Be With You: Resources and Ideas for Improved Sustainability, Green Teams, and Service Learning at Your Campus

Hours: 1.5

Learn how ACC English Department Faculty and Staff from Student Life, Campus Management, and Sustainability join forces to start Campus Green Teams. With a "chem free" weed pulling party, Love Your Lake Valentine's Day litter cleanup, recycling bin re-vamp, paper towel composting, zero waste events, recycling center field trip, and campus gardens, Green Team members have had a fun and informative experience - all while helping their campus become more sustainable. We'll share some tips for starting a Green Team, explore how sustainability activities can be integrated into Service Learning for students, and discuss the challenges and successes we encountered that may help as you navigate the exciting realm of increasing campus engagement while greening your campus!

Participants will learn how to: start a Green Team at their campus, and hear from the experience of current ACC Green Team leaders, integrate ACC’s Sustainability into your service learning curriculum, overcome some unique challenges for semester-based student engagement, raise awareness and influence behavior of building occupants to help improve sustainability in older, non-LEED certified facilities.

Prior to joining the ACC Sustainability team, Darien implemented sustainability programs in the Dominican Republic for the Center for Environment, Economy, and Society at Columbia University. Tim Kelly is a lifelong Austin resident, graduate of ACC and the UT McCombs School of Business, and is the Campus Manager of the South Austin Campus. He helped start the pilot Campus Green Team at SAC to get students and staff to help bring one of the college’s Pre-LEED standard buildings closer to LEED sustainability standards. As a facilities manager, and a concerned citizen, he sees it as his duty to promote sustainable practices at home and at work. It takes all of the users of resources, students and staff, to make sustainability happen.
