GA16: Forgiving Your Student Loans & Integrating Financial Education into Instruction

Hours: 1.5

In this two-for-one session, you’ll first gain a greater knowledge of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF), one of the most beneficial federal student loan programs available to borrowers. You’ll learn about who is eligible, the types of loans that are eligible, and what you need to provide to the Department of Education for approval. You’ll be prepared for when the PSLF takes effect in 2017! In the second half of the session, ACC’s new Student Money Management Office will provide tips and ideas on how to integrate financial education into your classroom instruction and conversations with students. Do you remember where you learned about personal finance? Most likely your answer isn’t “in school.” The Student Money Management Office will change that for our students.

Participants will understand how to qualify and apply for the PSLF Program. Participants will also gain access to tools and resources available through the Student Money Management to allow them to integrate financial education into their instruction.

Eileen Eiden is the Student Loan Supervisor at ACC. She has been working with a variety of students regarding their student loan debt for the last seven years. She has a vast knowledge of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. Karen Serna is the Director of ACC's recently established Student Money Management Office. Prior to this role she spent 13 years developing and creating programming promoting financial stability in low-income households as the Director of Financial Programs at Foundation Communities.
