GA16: Teaching to Ghosts

Hours: 1.5

Is your class designed for the “average” student? In this session, I will share some principle's from Todd Rose's book "The End of Average" that has changed the way I think about WHO and HOW I am teaching. See an example of a metaphor driven, mastery-based approach that is designed to work with each student at their own level. Take a glimpse inside a mind that surfs wave after wave of carefully constrained chaos and tell me I’m crazy. My wife will take your side. Reflect on your own practices and discuss with colleagues the implications for your classrooms or web-based courses.

Participants will walk away with: a better understanding of the attributes of individuals, the basic tenants of mastery or competency-based techniques and how these can guide our efforts to individualize instruction to give each student the best opportunity for success. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm with other faculty about how they can apply these principles to their own situations.
