SDD18: Enhanced Advising through Academic Coaching

Hours: 1.3

Academic advisors across ACC have begun training in academic coaching to enhance the advising experience in support of the guided pathways model. This workshop will explore the coaching process and the relationship between coaching and academic success, increased persistence, and engagement. This workshop represents an opportunity for faculty to learn more about the academic coaching model and the impact on the classroom.

Participants will benefit from a greater understanding of the role of advising in student success via coaching, outreach, and holistic review. The workshop will enhance the relationship between advising and instruction by providing additional detail regarding the services provided by Student Services.

Michael Acosta serves as the Dean of Student Services for the ACC Highland Campus. With over 15 years of higher education administrative experience, Mike has extensive experience in student advocacy roles at various institutions. His passion is student success, having completed research in academic outcomes for first-generation students in strategic academic programming. Mike holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, a Master of Public Service and Administration, and a Doctorate in Higher Education Administration.
