SDD18: Avoiding Stereotypes: Military Culture 101 and ACC's Veteran Outreach

Hours: 3

Join Jeff Moe, LMSW, as he speaks from his own experience as a US Army Paratrooper, student veteran, and social worker about military culture and its implications for the academic environment and Brad Robichaux as he discusses his role at ACC as the VetSuccess on Campus Counselor.
ACC Veteran Affairs will discuss services offered at the Veterans Resource Center (VRC). VRC staff is available to help veterans and their dependents enroll at ACC, pay for college, and tap into the rich network of support and services to help transition into and through college toward their graduation and/or transfer.
After attending this session, you will be able to recognize the key elements of military socialization as well as the strengths and challenges that it poses for the academic environment. Additionally, you will discover the diversity that is present within the military and develop tools to avoid stereotyping individual veterans.

Participants will gain knowledge of working with this student population and understanding the accommodations that students with PTSD/TBI may need in the classroom to level the playing field.
After attending this workshop, participants will develop greater awareness of ways in which the military experience impacts veterans' learning experiences. Additionally, attendees will be better informed as to the types of services offered at the Veterans Resource Center and our VetSuccess on Campus Counselor.

Jeff Moe, LMSW works for the US Department of Veterans Affairs as the Student Veteran Outreach Coordinator at UT Austin. Jeff served for seven years in US Army, deploying to Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division and later to Iraq with 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
