SDD18: Second Shift: Female Leaders in Higher Education

Hours: 1.3

When asked, many women cite family responsibilities as personal obstacles to career advancement. This can be especially true in the field of higher education. Can the same be said of male leaders? Most women work one shift at their respective places of employment, and then go home to start their "second shift" (Hochschild, 2003). Even women without children must tend to household responsibilities that can monopolize any personal time they may carve out for themselves. Even the tenure system, when established in the late 1930s and early 1940s, focused more on work than family. Has the field of higher education made any significant advancements in recent years to change any of this? If not, how can female leaders in higher education find work/life balance without hitting that proverbial glass ceiling? This workshop will focus on creating an environment on any college and university campus that will be fair to all employees - regardless of gender.

Workshop participants will walk away with techniques they can employ to improve their work/life balance. In addition, the information provided will allow all participants to become more aware of policies and procedures that can improve their chances for career advancement in the field of higher education.
