SDD18: ACC Students and Academic Locus of Control

Hours: 1.3

This workshop will provide research on ACC students and their levels of academic locus of control. Contrasts will be presented between differing student demographic, behavioral, attitudinal and value factors. This research presents an opportunity to learn more about ACC students cognitive beliefs regarding their success in higher education and how ACC might leverage this knowledge to better support and advise current and incoming students.

A participant in this workshop will walk away with a knowledge of an interesting and important measure of cognitive belief that relates to academic success. A participant will also understand how different groups at ACC differ on their incoming cognitive "health" in regards to beliefs about academic success and meeting goals. It is the hope that participants can then give feedback as to how ACC might utilize this tool to aid the support and advising of ACC students.

Dr. Echevarria-Cruz is the current Dean of Liberal Arts for Social and Behavioral Sciences. This research was completed in partnership with Professors Rennison Lalgee (Sociology) and Shirin Khosropour (Psychology). All colleagues are accomplished researchers who seek to expand ACC's use of data to increase persistence, engagement and completion. All three colleagues have doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and have served at ACC for multiple years as faculty, researchers, Peace and Conflict Studies director/members and Faculty Data Coaches.
