SDD18: Financial Wellness: ACC's Student Money Management Office

Hours: 1.3

"Spending less/saving more" was the number 5 New Year's resolution in 2017. If it's on the top of your 2018 list, come learn from ACC's Student Money Management Office fun (yes, fun!) ways to spend less, and save more. While these tips and tricks will be useful for you, they're also useful to pass along to students. The activities we introduce in this session can be incorporated into the classroom as part of instruction, homework assignments, or extra credit. We'll also demo our new online financial education platform with nearly endless modules on personal finance topics from budgeting to investing.

Participants will leave with tips and tricks for spending less and saving more, and a knowledge of programming and resources are available through the Student Money Management Office.

Karen Serna became the first director of Austin Community College’s Student Money Management Office in February 2016. In the office’s first year, over 3,000 students received in-person financial education and over 2,000 students engaged in a robust text messaging program. Ms. Serna has 14 years experience in developing and implementing financial capability programs and has also held roles as an operations coordinator for a homeless shelter, a high school Biology teacher, and an English as a Second Language teacher.
Ms. Serna received her Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Ethics from St.Edward’s University and her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
