SDD18: Intro to Design Thinking: Facilitating Creative Problem-solving in Your Classroom

Hours: 1.3

Educators from across disciplines are experimenting with ways of developing students’ creative problem-solving confidence through design thinking. In all levels of education today we hear about active, project-based, experiential, and student-centric teaching strategies. How might we apply them in ways that really help students develop the skills and mindsets they need to thrive in a world of growing complexity and ambiguity? Participate in easy-to-facilitate design thinking exercises that you can translate to your classroom, no matter what subject you teach.

A participant in this workshop will walk away with:

• An understanding of what design thinking is and how it can benefit both faculty and students.
• Details of how to facilitate two intro-level design thinking activities with your students.
• Resources for further design thinking activities to use in your classroom.

Gail Bayeta is currently the ACC Visual Communication Dept. Chair and has been a design educator for over 15 years. Trained in Design Thinking facilitation through partnerships with IBM, Gail is passionate about the value that Design Thinking can bring to all classrooms.
Molly McClurg is a Assoc. Professor of User Experience Design at ACC. She has lead numerous Design Thinking workshops as a User Experience Designer in the healthcare industry and believes today's learners can benefit greatly from Design Thinking approaches.
