SDD18: Suicide Prevention: Bystander Training

Hours: 1.3

Suicide is the most preventable death that we as a college community can learn about and impact. This bystander prevention training provides a basic overview of suicide trends and suicide prevention resources available for faculty and staff to utilize when helping someone in need, including where to refer for help and how to notify the ACC CARES Team about a student showing suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
This workshop is an introduction to suicide prevention. Participants who are interested in becoming suicide prevention gatekeepers will be invited to next level (gatekeeper) trainings for faculty and staff. This presentation will also include resources that all faculty and staff can use to assist students and others with suicide prevention.

A participant in this workshop will walk away with:

1. An understanding of suicide trends nationally and regionally.
2. An understanding of warning signs, risk factors and protective factors for suicide.
3. Available resources to assist someone showing suicidal thoughts/behaviors.
4. Information on how to refer a student of concern to ACC CARES Behavioral Intervention Team.
5. Crisis Contact Information, including hotlines, text lines, and phone numbers.
