SDD18: Don’t Do This Alone: How To Identify Concerning Behaviors Using ACC Resources

Hours: 1.3

Sometimes students exhibit behaviors that raise serious concerns about their well-being, stability, or potential for harming themselves or others. ACC CARES (Campus Assessment, Response, Evaluation and Support) are teams of professionals promoting the health and safety of the campus communities. CARES team members are dedicated to the prevention, early intervention and response to distressing, threatening and disruptive behaviors. Learn how to identify when students can and should be referred to CARES and how this multidisciplinary team helps create a healthy and safe environment for the ACC college community by coordinating resources and support plans for students of concern. This presentation will review when and how to refer a concerning student to the CARES teams of each ACC Region before a situation becomes critical or potentially dangerous and will include scenarios for discussion.

A participant in this workshop will walk away with:

1. An understanding of what kinds of concerning student behaviors can be referred to the ACC CARES Behavioral Intervention Teams.
2. An understanding of what kinds of concerning student behaviors should be directly referred to emergency services/campus police.
3. An understanding for how to make a referral to CARES and a template for making referrals via email.
4. Resource guide for addressing concerning student behaviors, including campus police contact, counseling services, and student conduct.
