SDD18: Turning Group Presentations that Bomb into “The Bomb”

Hours: 1.3

This session is aimed at faculty members who teach face-to-face courses and incorporate short-term small group projects/assignments. Participants will be guided through engaging activities that both reveal the sources of pitfalls to group productivity and apply solutions to minimize pitfalls from happening.

Objectives:
Participants will learn why students often struggle with short-term small group projects.
Participants will be able to incorporate four strategies for helping students minimize the pitfalls that often occur while working together on such projects.

Russ Wittrup, Professor of Communication Studies, has been teaching college students how to work together effectively in small groups for the past thirty years in such courses as Introduction to Speech Communication and Business and Professional Communication . In most all of his classes students complete group projects each semester. Over the years he has developed a systematic approach for enabling students successful experiences on such assignments. He would like to share these insights with you. Russ has been a full time faculty member at ACC since Fall, 2001.
