SDD18: Please Get Out Your Phones: 5 Uses for Smart Phones to Increase Student Interaction

Hours: 1.3

After spending a year or two of asking students to put away their iphones, I began asking students to get them out and use information available on the internet to enhance the learning process.

The five ways to engage students and their phones are:

1. Simple fact checking
2. To research controversial facts and figures and to understand that the info on the Internet is not monolithic
3. To research information that would be better introduced by students instead of the instructor
4. Definitions and "deep" definitions, including etymology
5. To research allusions

A participant in this workshop will walk away with:

Another way to engage students
An active way to illustrate the slipperiness of "facts"
A way to encourage a larger vocabulary
Another way to encourage the idea that facts need interpretation

Perspective on the vagaries of the internet Joe Hoppe started teaching English at ACC in 1996. After eleven years he achieved his goal of becoming a full time professor of English. He also teaches Creative Writing and has had several books of poetry published.
