Computerside Chats 2017 – Session 4

Hours: 1.5

Computerside Chats – Session 4
This is part 4 of a 4 part online learning workshop for ACC faculty. Feel free to join us for as many sessions as you can, but recognize that this series is designed so that you don’t have to attend every session.

Computerside Chats are the ACC book club for faculty where you DON’T HAVE TO READ THE BOOK! Chats for 2017 will focus on the book “Student Engagement Techniques: A Handbook for College Faculty” by Elizabeth Barkley. In each session, you’ll be introduced to material from a few chapters of the book. Sessions will present at least one chapter of “best practices” and two chapters of “Student Engagment Techniques” which are easily implemented class activities. You’ll then have time to engage in an online conversation with your teaching colleagues about how ACC instructors might adopt some of these new methods in their classrooms. You’ll be able to get the latest evidence-based teaching without having to dig in to the research on your own.

This session will focus on several chapters. The Tips and Strategies chapters we’ll cover are Chapter 10 – Ensuring Appropriate Challenge AND Chapter 11 – Promoting Holistic Learning. The Student Engagement Techniques chapters we’ll cover are Chapter 16 – Application and Performance AND Chapter 17 – Attitudes and Values. You’ll hear best practices and actual activities you can use to ensure that your classes are challenging your students at the right level, that enable you to design your course with the big picture in mind, to give your students practice applying course material, and to improve how your students view your class and learning in general. You will need access to a computer for this event. Upon registering, you’ll be sent information about how to join the webex meeting. You do NOT need to have a webcam or any other special equipment.

For more information about these events, including a schedule of all the sessions and a copy of the table of contents from this semester’s book, please visit www.austincc.edu/computersidechats.
