GA15: The Promise of the Maker Movement at ACC: Student Success and Collaborative Learning

Hours: 1.5

The "maker movement" refers broadly to the growing number of students, tinkerers, engineers and artists who creatively design and build material objects for both playful and useful ends. At ACC, opportunities abound for using making and makerspaces, both inside and outside of classes, to improve student success via new skills, development of design thinking, collaborative learning and the encouragement of persistence, challenge seeking, and resourcefulness. This workshop will describe current maker initiatives at ACC and explore ways to further incorporate making in curricula and student programs.

Anita Johnson is the Maker Project Coordinator at the HLC ACCelerator. She is also an instructor at TechShop, a for-profit makerspace in Round Rock, and a curriculum consultant for physical computing at the University of Texas UTeach Outreach program. At ACC, she has been a Lab Tech, tutor and student in the Electronics department. Prior to ACC, she spent 8 years as a Senior Product Manager for personal computer enhancements at Intel Corporation. Anita has a B.A. from Rice University, attended graduate school at MIT, and has an MBA from the University of Texas.
