GA15: Conflict De-escalation

Hours: 1.5

In this course, participants will learn the basic signs and indicators of a mental health crisis, and learn concrete tools and skills to help deescalate the crisis.

Laura Slocum, LPC - Practice Manager, Expanded MCOT, Austin Travis County Integral Care (ATCIC): Laura has worked at Austin Travis County Integral Care for almost nine years. In that time, Laura has worked at intensive outpatient and inpatient treatment facilities for persons with co-occurring substance and psychiatric disorders; Psychiatric Emergency Services and Crisis Hotline; supervised the Mobile Crisis Outreach Team; and is now the Practice Manager of the Expanded Mobile Crisis Outreach Team, an 1115 Medicaid Waiver project. Laura provides training for the Austin Police Department's and Travis County Sheriff's Office Crisis Intervention Team training, the ATCEMS Credentialing Academy, and is a Mental Health First Aid instructor.

Laura Hernandez Gold, LCSW - Prevention Services Manager, Austin Travis County Integral Care (ATCIC): Laura is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years of experience working with children, families, and the community. She currently oversees Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Suicide Prevention, and Disaster Preparedness & Response for ATCIC. She is a certified Youth and Adult MHFA Instructor, as well as a certified instructor in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) and ASK About Suicide. She is also certified in Incident Command Systems (ICS) and provides training to First Responders on Disaster Psychology. Laura co-leads the Austin Central Texas Suicide Prevention Coalition, and is also spearheading the Zero Suicide in Texas (ZEST) Initiative at ATCIC. Previously, Laura spent 10 years as a school Social Worker for Austin ISD, and provided crisis intervention and intensive case management services to 11 campuses at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.
