GA15: When Fish Climb Trees: Customizing Curriculum for Students with Disabilities
Hours: 1.5
There's a saying attributed to Einstein that says that a fish may be brilliant in water, but might be thought incompetent if asked to climb a tree. This image has become a classic of special education discourse. Customizing the classroom for students with disabilities can seem like a daunting and stressful task, but it doesn't have to be. This interactive workshop will explore the many simple techniques to make classrooms and curricula more user-friendly. From classroom setup to accessible reading materials to working with students on self-advocacy, having a mixed-ability class does not have to be a cause for distress, but an adventure in new perspectives.
