Develop and Incorporate Critical Thinking Into Your Mathematics Class

Hours: 2.5

Skill-based questions are an important part of developing students’ knowledge, but critical thinking problems push students to higher- level of thinking. It takes time and energy to develop these questions.

This workshop will provide practical examples and techniques for transforming skill-based thinking questions into questions that promote critical thinking skills.

Participants will have an opportunity to create and incorporate higher-level thinking questions into assessments.

Presenter Bios: Ivana is a former Fulbright Exchange Teacher from Slovakia, who immigrated to the U.S.A. in 2003. In 1990, she earned her B.S. in Mathematics, B.S. in Education, and B.S in Chemistry fromUniversity of P.J.Safarik, College of Natural Sciences. In 2000, she received her M.S. in Mathematics. Ivana has a teaching experience at both high school and college levels in both countries. Currently, Ivana is a full-time college-level Math faculty member at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs. Ivana is an enthusiastic educator with strong interpersonal skills and big passion for mathematics.

Shawna L. Mahan is very passionate about teaching and learning mathematics. Shawna has a BA in Mathematics (1988, CU Boulder) and a MS in Applied Mathematics (1995, CU Denver). She became a professional tutor at a community college in 1990 and discovered the joy of teaching mathematics. Since then, she has been teaching as an adjunct or full-time faculty member. She has been full-time faculty at Pikes Peak Community College since 2002. Currently, she is co-chair of the College-Level Mathematics Department. Over the span of her teaching career, she has taught algebra, trigonometry, calculus, etc. in a variety of formats. She has taught Intermediate Algebra and College Algebra the most often, specializing in the online format. Shawna enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading novels, gardening, and photographing nature.
