Old Business:
• Status of Expansion into Daytime at Round Rock
o Slack provided status update. Committee discussed the need for childcare for students in programs like Paralegal and suggested the department suspend offering courses at RRC and NRG and investigate options for offering courses at times and places when childcare is also offered by the college. Slack and Aguilar will explore those opportunities, pursue them, and report back to the committee.
• Status of Expansion into Distance Learning
o Aguilar provided updates on successes of new Distance Learning courses.
• ABA Approval
o Slack provided update on action taken, including AAfPE approval, next steps, and timeline.
New Business:
• Curriculum Planning
o The Committee reviewed the AAS degree plan and course catalog and discussed making math optional with a biology course and adding BCIS 1305 (Business Computer Applications). Committee discussed the importance of computer skills in the paralegal profession. The Advisory Committee voted unanimously to approve this change. The Dept Chair will request Curriculum Committee adopt this program revision.
• Enrollment and Student Success
o Committee reviewed data related to student success rates, discussed equity gaps, and reviewed and discussed high impact practices.
• Course Content
o Committee expressed interest in practical assignments as required by ABA. Slack, Aguilar, and Woods discussed criteria for practical assignments. Committee affirmed importance of practical writing assignments.
