Approval Minutes
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
Vanessa Lazo presented the minutes from the September 18, 2018 meeting.
Action taken: The minutes were approved after changing the term “half-time faculty” to “full-time 50% faculty”.
Vanessa Lazo asked if faculty wished to be added to or removed from any committees. Fahim Idais asked to be added to the Study Abroad Committee.
John McMinn-Reyna distributed copies of the committee reports that had been sent to faculty and asked for approval to add them to the minutes.
Action taken: The following committee reports were added to the minutes.
Item # 2:
Adjunct Facility Evaluation
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
The committee will meet mid-February to begin working on the adjunct faculty evaluations. The summary reports are due at the Dean's office by March 25. We expect to be done with them before spring break. The committee will start distributing the materials to the evaluators by February 11 (deadline for Adjuncts to turn in input forms). As always, the committee wants to remind everyone that it is mandatory to administer the student surveys every term we teach and to submit all portfolio materials when requested.
Item # 3:
Adjunct Faculty Interview
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
Foreign Language FT Position (Asian Language Specialist) Committee has received several applicants, but none meet the requirements for the position as written. This will most likely result in a failed search. Vanessa hopes that this gives credence to her request for a 50% part-time Korean faculty position
Item # 4:
Assessment
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
The results of our assessments from last fall are satisfactory. For 1411 Reading Comprehension, the following percentage of students received scores of 80% or higher on the assessment: Arabic = 68.4% (89.5% received scores of 70 or higher); Chinese = 82.4%; French = 78% (but 91% of students received scores of 70% or higher); German = 33% received scores of 80% or higher ( 73% had a 70% or higher); Italian = 59% (81.8% received scores of 70% or higher); Japanese = 100%; Latin = 100%; Russian = 68.9% (87.5% received scores of 70% or higher); and Spanish = 87.7%. For 2311 Reading Comprehension, the following percentage of students received scores of 80% or higher on the assessment: Arabic = 88.2%; German = 79%; Latin = 100%; Russian = 100%; Spanish = 80%. For Spanish 1412 Speaking, 92.3% of students received scores of 80% or higher.
Item # 5:
Curriculum
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
•The College has taken the ACC website address where the Curriculum Guidelines were stored to create a link to the College’s syllabus repository.
•Spanish 1300 content was adapted for a focus on Law Enforcement and is offered this spring, 2019. Our department was approached by a sergeant from the Austin Police Department (APD). SPAN 1300 was designed to accommodate the Police Department’s needs. In consultation with personnel from the APD, the format of distance learning was decided to be best for the officers, since their schedules were varied.
•Pat Receck, Dean of Health Sciences, was consulted last semester and was asked about the feasibility of including Spanish for Healthcare in the core curriculum of the Nursing Program. This may be included in the future, but not at this time.
Item # 6:
Distance Learning Committee/Early College High School
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
Nothing to report for Distance Learning committee.
•Vanessa Lazo continues to work on scheduling closely with ECHS and Dual Credit. To that end, we have Dr. Biegert attending our spring 2019 meeting.
•Three sections were canceled in the spring 2019 at the last minute, including one section each of ECHS at CHS and RVS and one section of Dual Credit at DSP. Vanessa has requested earlier notice as this greatly impacts our faculty.
•For fall 2019 there has been a request for Dual Credit at Peace Academy for Arabic. Fahim Idais is working closely with this school.
g. Eligibility List
Due to a decrease in the number of available sections each semester, the department will no longer accept applications for new MSTA positions in German, Japanese, and Spanish. There are no MSTA positions in the other languages. The only applications that we will honor will be for current MSTA's who are in their first or second year of the MSTA process and need to reapply each year until they rollover.

Foreign Languages Honor Society
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
Foreign Language Honor Society: Applications will be due on March 28 this semester and should be sent to Julie Klenhans-Urrutia at the South Austin Campus. Students in 1412 or higher classes who have received A’s in their language courses and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible for membership. Full membership costs $35 and is for life; associate membership costs $5 and is good for 6 months.
Item # 9:
New Faculty/ Outreach/Professional Development
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
Nothing to report for new faculty.
•In various events, both within ACC and at other venues, our language programs were promoted last year.
•Flyers and posters have been created and distributed for new and specialized courses, including our study abroad offerings.
•A plan for this semester is to attend various Spanish conversation meet-up groups in Austin to promote our Spanish study abroad offerings.
l. Professional Development
•Spring Development Day was held on January 18th this year, and a number of workshops of general interest to all faculty were included.
•The main focus of FOLA workshops during the Fall semester, and the beginning of the Spring, has been the technology platforms that are included with Spanish textbooks that publishing companies have sent us to consider for possible future adoption. We had opportunities to listen to presentations from McGraw Hill and Pearson on November 30th, and Cengage on January 18th. On February 1st, Vistas Higher Learning presented a three hour workshop on the new edition of Vistas, our current textbook. Scott Gibby has done a wonderful job organizing and setting up these presentations.
Item # 10:
Scheduling
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
•Vanessa Lazo continues to work on program sequencing of all languages to make sure that days and times from fall classes have a counterpart in the spring to ease student planning.
•San Gabriel Campus opened this past year. FOLA had two Spanish courses on the schedule and neither one of them made for fall 2018. Spring 2019 also did not make.
•The German Program and Vanessa are making careful and thoughtful adjustments to the schedule to incorporate a Hybrid sequence.
•Rosa and Vanessa are carefully working on a new sequence for Spanish for Spanish Speakers to incorporate a focus on Business and Healthcare.
•Jan Emberson is developing a Spanish for Law Enforcement for this spring online in an 8 week session.
•Tim Altanero is considering a Spanish for Social Work online sequence.
Item # 11:
Spanish For Spanish Speakers/Study Abroad
Presenter
Vanessa Lazo
Discussion
We will offer Spanish III for Spanish Speakers with an emphasis on Business Spanish in the fall of 2019. We might also offer Spanish IV for Spanish Speakers with an emphasis on Medical Spanish in the fall of 2019 or spring of 2020. This change is due because the former book for Spanish 2313 and 2315 (Conozcámonos) is going out of print. Also, former Spanish 2313 and 2315 students voiced their interest for both categories. Having a specific emphasis might attract more students who are looking to enhance their Spanish in both areas.
Since there are many students who speak Spanish, but they don’t feel confident to enroll in Spanish III or IV for Spanish Speakers, we are planning to offer Spanish I for Spanish Speakers this fall. This is a pilot course that will allow us to know if there is a need for a course like this. We will be using Mundo 21 by Cengage. Depending on the success of this pilot course, we are planning to offer Spanish II for Spanish Speakers in the Spring of 2020. From there, students may be more confident to enroll in Spanish 2313 and 2315.
o. Special Events
Nothing reported.
p. Study Abroad
The following study abroad programs are scheduled for Summer, 2019. During the first summer session: Costa Rica (Spanish 2311 and Span 1300), led by Jan Emberson, Austria (German 1411), led by Bernadeta Kaminska. During the second summer session: Argentina
(Spanish 2312 and Span 1300), led by Jan Emberson

Spanish faculty have agreed to continue with Vistas, 5th edition for fall 2019, and any decision for a new adoption will be for fall 2020. We may need to delete the optional """"""""bundle option from the master syllabus for fall 2019. VHL has confirmed that we can continue using the 5th edition supersite plus (and code) for fall 2019, spring 2020, and summer 2020.
