A&E CAD Website Presentation
Presenter
Erlene Clark, Matt Wilson
Discussion
Erlene Clark and Matt Wilson presented a new website for the AUTO CAD department. The site was built off-site under another domain using Wordpress: http://cadlearningcenter.com/
Questions were raised form the committee:
The issue of the department having both credit and CE classes was addresed. Edward asked about linking to the new CE schedule pages.
Presenters explained that the Wordpress login system allowed only ACC students to see the career options, not just anyone on the internet.
Presenters asked about LDAP access. Edward stated that this was probably going to be denied.
Marget Peloquin asked about templating. Edward explained that it fell outside of the scope of the purpose of the template and that the site could use it's own look and feel for now as long as a few simple things were done to the site such as proper logo and links back to ACC main site for catalog and schedule links but to be aware that these links were semester specific.
Edward stated that the small graphics informing users of the software that is used in the program could be misaken for advertising and may need some more review.
The group discussed the department's social media efforts. Brian Smith commented and approved of the way messaging and engagement was being executed. LinkedIn was discussed. The presenters explained that had already had success connecting students with employers using this social network.
Matt Wilson asked about hosting and URLs. Edward explained that IT was working toward hosting environments for open source software packages such as Wordpress and Drupal and to check with Charlie Loa.

Google Sites is great for static sites, but ......

Discussion
Google Sites users explain that running updates to a website built with Google Sites is a difficult process. I explained that blog style updates are more suited to different environments and inquired Lara Niles if Blogger was part of our Google Apps for Education package. She explained that we could use blogger using our ACC credentials and I tested this out.
the system worked great but the URL falls outside of our Google domain. here is the test post that I wrote:
Mary Parker asked about file sotrage in Google Docs vs websites. She expalined that the MAth Department had to use word processing documents for math equations and other materials due to formatting issues. She explained that the math department hosted these files in both their website and Google Docs. She inquired how much space was allotted to a user.
I followed up with Mary later on that week. I explained that Google Docs recently had a bump in storage capacity to 10GB and provided some links to documentation. I also provided a link to a tool which constructs math equations and allows them to be downloaded:
