The following message is from Rich Lee, Datatel Technology Manager:
There have been many questions related to UI 4.2 and I wanted to address the product, the issues and the steps we have taken to ensure a smooth transition. UI 4.2 is Datatel's latest iteration of Colleague's UI. It has been designed to take the next step with Colleague in performance and usability.
UI 4.2 Enhancements:
* Dynamic window sizing so users choose the size of each form.
* Dramatic increase in field to field performance.
* A new print form button directly prints any UI 4.2 form without having to use a 3rd party program. So users can now easily print Colleague forms.
* Direct integration into Excel, pull data from a Colleague table into excel with a click of the button.
* Enhanced lookups, all lookups have the new Silverlight look and feel, so lookups are consistent across the application.
One of the major architectural changes to UI 4.2 is the removal of wIntegrate from the UI technology stack. This technical change makes the performance and usability of UI 4.2 possible. What Datatel is doing in UI 4.2 and beyond is not possible without removing wIntegrate.
For UniData database clients there are three technical issues with the removal of wIntegrate:
* Querybuilder will not be accessible from within the UI 4.2 interface
* UniData Paragraphs that are attached to menus will not work from within the UI 4.2 interface
* Any custom routine that uses a WIN. subroutine will not work within the UI 4.2 interface.
For each of these issues there is a plan to mitigate its effects and ensure a smooth transition to UI 4.2.
Querybuilder and UniData paragraphs:
Each client has a perpetual license to wIntegrate, even after UI Desktop and UI 4.1's end of life have come and gone, clients will be able to continue to use these interfaces to execute Querybuilder reports and paragraphs. Even after UI Desktop has reached its end of life, users will be able to use their existing UI Desktop icon to access Querybuilder and UniData paragraphs on menus. Accessing Colleague forms through UI Desktop and UI 4.1 will not be possible beyond end of life.
Better query tools and strategies exist today for UniData clients:
o Datatel Reporting and Operating Analytics brings a comprehensive reporting solution to Colleague, which includes out-of -the-box dashboards, meta-data layer (universes/data marts), and ad-hoc reports.
o Datatel's Operational Data Store (ODS) is a cost effective way to move to a more contemporary reporting platform that allows easier access to the data with any modern ODBC compliant reporting tool (SQL Server Reporting Services, Access/Excel, Crystal, etc.)
o Entrinsik Informer is a UniData native reporting tool which interacts directly with the UniData database without using the UniSQL layer, this provides a simple way to migrate reports.
WIN Subroutines
Datatel is currently inventorying client uses for the WIN Subroutines, Datatel will be providing a document that lays out alternative methods to accomplish the same tasks that the WIN subroutines provide. Please send me a note with the WIN subroutine that are used at your institution and its specific use within your Colleague custom. (rcl@datatel.com) This way Datatel can ensure that the document will be complete.
UI 4.2 Timeline
* Beta begins the week of August 15th
* Complete client trial begins October 1st
* General Delivery December 2010
There will be a UI 4.2 web demo next Friday. Please stay tuned for that announcement and if you have outstanding question be sure to attend. If there are issues that I've missed, or other concerns please let me know.
Item # 3:
Workforce Assistance Shelter Request
Presenter
Group Discussion
Discussion
The request by Workforce Assistance to create a shelter for Workforce Assistance students was approved. The Restriction Code SHW has been created in Coltest. However, it is now unclear whether the restriction should be a level 1 or level 7. Also, it does not appear that WIA and TAA are currently valid office codes, so there are still a few things that need to be worked out.
Item # 4:
Add-A-Person Subcommittee Status Update
Presenter
Linda Kluck
Discussion
August is an extremely busy month. Linda reported that September will be much better for organizing a subcommittee meeting to discuss the add-a-person standards.
Item # 5:
Course Types
Presenter
Marie Fofi
Discussion
Marie requested a new course type of GRF for Grant-Funded Continuing Education class sections. This was approved and this new course type was added to Coltest on August 5, 2010.
Dianne requested a new course type of ECS for Early College Start class sections. This was approved and this new course type was added to Coltest on August 5, 2010. It was approved on August 6, and created in Collive on Monday, August 9, 2010.
Item # 6:
ODS Status & Documentation
Presenter
Andrew
Discussion
Andrew explained how the Datatel-delivered ODS transforms provide but a mere fraction of the file and field data that exists in UniData, and that the creation of new ODS transforms is a labor-intensive activity. However, IT has made a good start on creating new transforms (and the corresponding SQL Server tables). The creation of transforms/tables will continue, and Andrew will make a spreadsheet/list available by August 16, 2010, and continue to update it on a frequent basis.
Item # 7:
Entrinsik Informer Update
Presenter
Andrew
Discussion
The brief contract disagreement between ACC and Entrinsik that existed at the time of the CORE meeting was resolved within a couple of days, and everything is fine now.
IT will continue with the outreach project to get reporting specialists familiar with this reporting software tool. Also, on-site training arrangements are in the process of being requested.
Also: Entrinsik is sponsoring the ''First Informer User Conference'' on October 11-12, 2010. (Nice location, too.)
Here is some information:
We would love to see you at the first ever Informer Conference (ICON 2010) scheduled for October 11-12th. Conference attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to enhance their Informer knowledge and learn about all of the exciting developments that Entrinsik has planned for Informer.
Registration is limited to 200 Informer customers and partners, so reserve your spot today! Please limit registrations to no more than five individuals per organization. Don't miss this opportunity to share ideas with Informer users worldwide -- it's a great way to learn what others are doing and how they are leveraging Informer v4 to query, report, analyze, and deliver operational data every day.
With a heavy focus on education and interaction, ICON 2010 will include breakout sessions with members of the Informer product development team, panel discussions on best practices and methodologies, product training, and networking with Informer v4 users from other organizations.
Register online today.
