* Re-Entry Nursing Updates- E. Huss reported increased trending in the Re-Entry Nursing program 33-35 students, 21 LVN and 73 RN students enrolled and have gone through the class.
* CE Virtual College Training Tyler has declined.
* Yvonne Van Dyke asked Ms. Huss how you are trending with the Re-Entry Nursing program (ex: How long have they been out of the nursing field). Ms. Huss responded that most had been out of the nursing field for at least 3 years or more and no, they had not been tracking all of the trends. Eileen Klein asked if Ms. Huss was going to be capturing all the data of the nurses entering the CE Re-Entry Nursing Program. Ms. Huss responded that yes they are going to be tracking that information. That they have nurses from all over the world Re-Entering the Nursing profession, some have been in the Mental Health field or other fields where they had not been getting clinical experience. Most are taking the Re-Entry Skills course to better prepare them for re-entry into the work force.
* Sally Foster asked Ms. Huss about the difficulties with clinical residency and out of state Re-Entry Nursing program students. Ms. Huss responded that we would not provide clinical residency for out of area or out of state students.
* Monica Minewiser asked about Hospice and Long Term Care facilities for clinicals. Ms. Huss responded, there is a shortage of clinical hours available in the Austin area. The Texas Board of Nursing will not reactivate nursing licenses unless they have their clinical hours in Texas.
* Update on CE Offerings- CE offering DVD and online courses for student convenience. The Critical Thinking Conference received mixed responses. They are working on a double conference meeting for both Educators and Hospital Staff. To provide customized conference for each group for more information or suggestions please call Ms. Huss at 223-7271.
* Ms. Huss - Just a reminder that the basic phlebotomy classes are 16 hours for nurses and case management, subject to availability. Yvonne Van Dyke asked is this information available online. Ms. Huss, yes online and in the ACC CE catalog.
* Ms. Huss - Externship students going through the CE program applying for work this summer. Sally Foster responded that she was unsure at this time if Seton was going to be able to make the Externship program this year. Ms. Huss, responded that she has 2 students that really wanted to be apart of the Seton Externship program this summer. Sally Foster replied that she would find out that information.

Discussion
IV Certification
* Pat Recek, the Board of Nursing does not require teaching of IV skills and therapy in r VNG programs. Most LVN's will get post certificates for IV training from their employers. Schools that teach IV training can provide the certificate. It is the employer's decision to accept the certificate. Elizabeth Huss will look into providing an IV push meds and IV piggyback course that would meet the standards for local care facilities.
* Pat Recek asked is the IV certificate an advantage, Leal May responded that they would still need to go through Seton's training program for IV. Gail Roberts felt that St. David's would accept an IV certificate, with a course designed to meet their standards. Sally Foster responded yes, but IV training is very different from school to school, nurses could test out of the IV training at the St. David's facility. Toni Rowin, of Seton, indicated that Seton could compare their training and ACC training; she stated that this would be a great service value for Seton Healthcare Network. Yvonne VanDyke – the opportunity and efficiency is incumbent on us to align and explore. Ashley Langford and Carol Funderburgh both agreed – that we all had the exact same IV training, which was helpful and gave us comfortable background knowledge.
* Monica Minewiser – indicated that in the LTC area, new graduates are monitored their first time or until they are comfortable and recertify every 2 years.
* Yvonne Van Dyke – Seton, indicated a desire to work with ACC to provide continuity with education. Pat Recek will forward the course objectives to representatives for review and suggestions for ways to make it congruent with facility expectations.
* Graduate input
o Area of practice: Debra Jones – Skills Lab for ACC EVC, Ashley Langford – Dell Children's Hospital, Carol Funderburgh – Seton Shoal Creek
o Role of LVN: Leah May asked the VNG graduates: " Do you feel comfortable telling your co-workers if you are not comfortable with performing a task?" Ashley Langford – Yes, the do not ask for things that are out of my skill of practice. Pat Recek also indicated that the program is emphasizing scope of practice in the Professional Development course. Also, P. Recek indicated that the new required jurisprudence exam will require students to very closely examine issues related to standards of care and scope of practice.
o Preparation: Debra Jones – I walked away with excellent preparation for my Skill Lab experiences. Ashley Langford – We got more hands on experience, sometimes they trust me a little bit too much, because of my ACC training. Carol Funderburgh –Because of my ACC training, I was comfortable with the MedSurg when I first graduated and now in my role at Shoal Creek.
o Comments:
* VNG program is having a presentation on "Tile" Charting in response to LTC Request:
o Pat Recek – we are working on "Tile Charting", 30% of graduates are going into the long-term care field.
* Feedback on student evaluations of clinical sites:
o Pat Recek provided feedback on students evaluations of clinical sites for the fall semester: Acute care – extremely positive responses, the only negative response was adequate Space for pre and post I conferences.
o Yvonne Van Dyke asked if the facilities could get written feedback from the evaluations. P. Recek will forward those items.. Judith Fiene asked for that feedback also. (Note, VNG did not use ASH in fall 2007 so no feedback available).
* THECB Study on VNG Curriculum
o P. Recek reported on a special advisory committee to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) appointed to assist with the development of the new VNG curriculum for the state. Consultants have been hired and will issue a report September 1st
o PR – We are really trying for students to recognize what their scope of practice is and to be assertive about it. September 1st Jurisprudence Exam – nurse practices. Students need to be aware of the legal scope of their practice and mission to change and identify.

o Yvonne Van Dyke – What is the sequence of the JP-Exam and the NCLEX? Pat Recek – not sure exactly how, they would need to take the JP-Exam before the submitting for licensure, they will have multiple opportunities to take the NCLEX.
o JW – We might be providing the Jurisprudence Exam at ACC. Pat Recek – an online non-secured test – nothing has been finalized. Our December graduates will have to pass along with out of state nursing graduates. Yvonne Van Dyke – We will be looking to ACC to provide more information.

Discussion
St. Davids: Gail Roberts reported that 60 students applied for 40 jobs – Summer session 60-70 graduates go through our Snap program training (two year program working well).
Emily Rahe: LVN's augmenting what they learn, rehires from ACC.
Rosamar: space for pre and post conference- she is doing her best to find space, scheduling space in advance. Hiring more LVN, for West medsurg – happy with the LVN's that they hired. Re-entry nurses are doing very well. Hiring new graduates and trying to hire more.
Seton Family of Hospitals: Toni Rowin - Our residency program started in September with 65 graduates of which 60 did not turn in to cohort. 114 to 109 nurses failed boards are removed from the program and reentered when they pass the board. Over 100 – still offering all critical areas – still a learning curve – issues with critical thinking skills, the use of simulation, student experiences is very limited, complex IV infusions. Safety Simulations before going on to the patient.
Sally Foster– We are hiring as many new graduates as planned – no hiring freeze. We are continuing to work on our Compass electronic orders. Compass training is in different stages.
Leah May- Magnet Emergency Operations area has eight beds adjacent to the ER – ER Phys Clinical, Psych unit, Cardi Enzy, Stress Tests – open three weeks ago and is running to full cap. Manage patients that can be are on an out patient status. Hospital district has crisis intervention – Psych population no cap. Judith Fiene – MHMR is not admitting any patients.
Yvonne Van Dyke - Students should be aware of the Mental Health aspect of their patients. A patient needing surgery because of a suicide attempt, students should be educated with aspect to their Mental Health needs.
Leah May– The soldiers coming back from Iraq that will have PTSD will affect all areas of patient care, we are not prepared and we are looking at war Psychological issues.
Pat Recek told the committee that the BON does not require MH clinical – some theory; P. Recek asked for confirmation that continuing psych clinical is important for VNG graduates in this are. Overwhelming response was "yes" that the need for training is going to increase.
Yvonne Van Dyke – Williamson County facility aggressive 2010 open, final word in medical school expanding more people being trained, keeping our finger on the pulse for health care professional.
Sally Foster - Compass training and preparing for Orientation in Aug – bring students up to speed. Jeanie Ward - Any way for students to keep their passwords for 2 years? Sally Foster - not as this time security issue.
The Dell Children's Hospital:
Others: Sheere Johnson – of ADC, confirmed that community experience are very valuable for students. Ambulatory care l clinics are a different experience than working in a hospital environment – we can use new graduates, Ob-pedi seems to be the hardest part – but very rewarding. At the clinic you get to see the progression of the child and teaching and educating the families. With the new generation parents not wanting to vaccinate their children has become challenging.
Pat Recek - we do provide for our students exposure to community clinics and have student experience other options for employment.
Pat Recek - are re-entry nurses finding placement? Elizabeth Huss – yes.
Long Term Care: Monica Minewiser – We have all levels of care, we do not have our Medicare certificate yet, most of our LVN's are from ACC. We are cross training our nurses to work more with mental health. We do not work 16 hours shifts only 12 hour shifts. The Baylor plan – 16 hours weekend shifts work 32 get paid for 40. Looking for graduates to have more of a social model training, resort style of retirement.
Pat Recek - Future trends with the older populations – long-term care courses for ACC students
Monica Minewiser - More of a social model of long-term care – regulations are becoming more resident's rights versus patient rights.
Sally Foster – Students will need more pysch for long-term care facilities.
Jeanie Ward - Cornerstone facility for clinical training for long-term health care, and Texas Neurological Rehab.
Elizabeth Huss - Elderly are staying home longer, while the Long-term nursing home is becoming more for patients with complicated needs for quadriplegic and brain damaged. Retirement is becoming small communities versus nursing homes.
Monica Minewiser - We call them apartments. We have meds given by medication aide. We are also trying to reduce on-site drug use among the elderly. We alert physicians if we think its too much etc..
We also work with Pharmacy consultants, have them write letters to the Dr.s showing the state we are trying to reduce the drug use in the elderl, most are psych meds. Regulations are so strict, for the use of Ativan is considered a chemical restraint. We have a program in place for restraint.
Yvonne Van Dyke - Students should be aware of the restrictions from place to place within the health care community.
Mental Health/Illness: Judith Fiene ASH – recently received a grant to reduce restraint and seclusion. We have chosen to culture transformation IACT patient centered model, more of a resort style and patient choice. Patient care and interpersonal team work. Interactional behavior how you speak to the patients, asking versus command language. Buying beds at the hospital for service provided.
