Report of NLNAC Visit

ADN – Jeanie Ward – NLNAC conducted their review in September 2008, ACC received positive comments; official approval received end of March 2009 of re-accreditation for an additional 8 years, next scheduled review will be in the Fall 2016.
VNSG – Pat Recek – NLNAC conducted their review in October 2008, official approval received end of March 2009, re-accredited for an additional 8 years; next scheduled review will be in the Fall 2016. Ms. Recek reported ACC is one out of three colleges accredited by the NLNAC in the State of Texas in regards to the VNSG program.

ADN Program - Mobility Track Update

Current Students – Ms. Hoover reported there are currently 9 students enrolled in the ADN program. The program began with 9 students; 1 student withdrew from the program in the 2nd semester, and 1 student was readmitted in the 2nd semester who was in the previous year's class.
Demographics of Class – 1 each from Center Point, Harper, Fredericksburg, Kingsland, and Llano; 4 from Kerrville; 1 student is a paramedic, 8 are LVN's – 1 recently completed LVN program at SACs; 4 completed LVN program at Schreiner University.
Enrollment Update – Ms. Hoover reported we are possibly looking at having 9 students in the new program beginning August 2009. There are currently 60 students who have shown interest in the ADN program and/or are working on the pre-requisite courses.
Discussion – Margie Lieck suggested we present another information session at the hospital. Cindy will get with Margie to see when a good time would be to set this up. There was also discussion and several positive remarks regarding offering the Traditional Track Program or a 1+1 program in Fredericksburg.
Jeanie Ward asked Margie Lieck if HCMH was experiencing a hiring freeze similar to the hospitals in Austin. Margie reported HCMH does not have a hiring freeze, they have increased the requirements for CNAs and the hospital will be looking at the need to replace retiring nurses in the next 3 to 5 years; and reduce the number of agency nurses the hospital uses. In 2008 the hospital budgeted 300K for agency nurses and they spent over a million dollars. The hospital has a 3 year strategic plan for the hospital to become a learning facility with an OB internship program.

Vocational Nursing Program Update

Current Students – Ms. Miller reported there are currently 6 students in the VNSG program, who will complete the course in May 2009. There were 8 students who started the program in Spring 2008, 1 student withdrew and 1 student failed in the 1st semester, 1 student returned to the program from the previous class in the 2nd semester and 1 student withdrew in the 2nd semester.
Demographics of Class: 1 each from Blanco, Burnet, London and Mason; 2 from Fredericksburg.
Enrollment update – Prospective Fall 2009-2010 program: 23 prospective students – 4 have completed all pre-requisite courses, 7 will complete pre-requisite courses in Spring 09, 12 will be completing their pre-requisites Summer 09; realistically we will be looking at a class size of between 14 and 16 as there were several student struggling with Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology in Spring 09 semester.
Cindy visits with an average of 3 students per week; as time permits she conducts individual information sessions.
Linda and Cindy attended "College Day" at LBJ High School in Johnson City on November 5, 2008. Over the course of the morning 182 students attended a brief information session. Brochures were available regarding Nursing by Johnson and Johnson and the LVN and ADN program with ACC. Six students signed up expressing interest in attending an Information Session further describing the program.
Information sessions were held on Saturday, January 10, 2009 with 7 students in attendance; and on Friday, March 27, 2009 with 6 students in attendance. There are currently 94 students who have shown interest and/or are working on pre-requisite courses.

Hill Country University Center Update

Cindy spoke with Jimmy Sparks with the Hill Country University Center and he reported funds have been received to complete Phase 1 and a portion of Phase 2. Construction should start in July or August 2009 and take up to 12 months to complete. Phase 1 will be approximately 24,000 sq. ft.; will house office administration offices, classrooms and a science lab.

Pat Recek announced Linda Miller was retiring as the Vocational Nursing Instructor in Fredericksburg at the end of May 2009. Linda joined ACC as a faculty member in August 1997 and was instrumental in starting the VNSG program in Fredericksburg. She was recognized and awarded a plaque for her planting and nurture of the flower garden outside the Nursing Program Office and Building 6 on the Fredericksburg Campus. A reception for Linda will follow the Nursing Advisory Committee Meeting today.
