Course Requirements

Below is a list of assignments and their grade percentages for this course. If any of these projects or grades change, I will notify you of those changes before we continue with the project. Projects along with attendance, participation and presentation contribute to your final grade for the class.

Watch it / Discussions (10%)

All video content will be followed by students answering discussion prompts in the related MIRO board

Read it / Analyze The Principles (30%)

All chapter readings in the textbook will be followed by students creating a google slide deck of examples of existing designs (websites, apps, software, IoT, digital interfaces, service interactions, etc.) ‘in the wild’ that either adhere to or violate 10 of the principles covered in the reading. A screenshot of gif of an example will be placed in a slide along with the students’ analysis of each example. They will provide their analysis of each example: Which principle is it an example of? Does it adhere or violate the principle? Why or why not?

Projects (40%)

Each competency will have a related design challenge where students will apply principles from the assigned chapters and resources. Projects may include multiple steps of the design process, critiques, iterations, and final process presentations.

Retrospectives (20%)

After each project, students will complete a personal retrospective. They will answer the questions provided in their personal retrospective document and collect a running document throughout the semester.

Online Resources

Tools

  • MIRO app will be used (info in Blackboard orientation)

  • Sketchbook (any kind will do, I recommend a “dot grid” sketchbook though!

Course Subjects

Instruction in the design of the interaction between users and products, including the elements of language, visual representations, physical objects or space, time, and behaviors. Introduction to Cognition, Human Factors, and the Psychology of Design.

We will work to deeply understand people and how their brains work including:

  • How people see

  • How people read

  • How people remember

  • How people think

  • How people focus their attention

  • What motivates people

  • How people feel

  • People make mistakes

  • How people decide

We will explore why understanding what makes people tick is important to consider when designing interactions between users and products.

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

  1. Surveying role of human psychology principles in interaction design;

  2. Analyzing relationship of human cognition and design;

  3. Conceptualize maps and models of interaction;

  4. Prototype and test interaction designs that motivate a behavior.
