Course Requirements

● Week 1-2 ​Develop the story of your goals as a Designer.

○ Identify current events, skills, attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the industry.

○ Appraise existing skills relevant to the industry.

○ Critique gaps in necessary skills.

○ Synthesize areas for job opportunities based on skill set.

● Weeks 2-3​ Research and formulate a strategy to achieve your career goals.

○ Articulate the various types of companies that hire UX Designers.

○ Research various job titles in UX Design.

○ Formulate professional goals: select a target company type and job role.

● Weeks 4 ​Construct a successful resume.

○ Identify what makes an effective resume or LinkedIn page.

○ Compare the various ‘users’ of a resume.

○ Decide what information to include in your resume based on the role.

○ Generate effective resumes for two desired roles.

● Weeks 5-6​ Create an effective case study.

○ Recognize elements that produce an effective UX case study.

○ Prioritize case study content and artifacts based on skill strengths and goals.

○ Write effective content for one case study of existing design work.

○ Create an effective case study and revise based on class critique.

● Weeks 7-8 ​Develop UX Interviewing Skills

○ Differentiate the elements of a UX interview.

○ Practice a case study presentation.

○ Prepare for participating in a design challenge.

Readings

All required readings are provided online and for free during class.

Course Subjects

This course will prepare UXUI students for entry into advanced-level courses in the UXUI program and begin the process of preparing to find a job in the field. Students will identify their unique strengths and weaknesses of industry-specific skills and learn to apply those to the artifacts and processes necessary to obtain their desired job role.  They will do so through preparation and enhancement of job-seeking artifacts (resumes, case studies, etc.) for professional presentation, development of presentation skills, and improvement of job-seeking techniques.

  • Identify skills outside of visual design that are increasing demanded of UX Designers.
