Course Requirements

An advanced study of the design process and art direction. Emphasis on form and content through the selection, creation, and integration of typographic, photographic, illustrative, and design elements. Concept production using Adobe Create Suite software.

ARTC 1417–Design Communication I
ARTC 1327 - Typography

Readings

No textbook is required for this course. Suggested readings may be shared throughout the semester.

Course Subjects

PROJECT 1 :: Personal brand identity

Designers will be designing the logo, color and branding system for their personal identity. From the final brand design, students will apply to business card, letterhead and thank you notes to be used in portfolio
 

PROJECT 2 :: Design with Brand Extension Strategies

Designers will create a concept for bottled beverage for an existing brand. Concepts must fit into an existing brand platform. It must be inspired by current trends in bottled beverages. Students will also create a carrier prototype for the bottle(s)


PROJECT 3 :: Environmental space (ie trade show or retail store front)

Design an Environmental Space with an Integrated Theme
 

PROJECT 4 :: Brand identity & style guide

Designers will be designing the brand identity for a chosen company. From the final brand design, students will write and develop a brand style guide that outlines standards for appropriate usage and touchpoints showing the mark and other elements in application.

 

Student Learning Outcomes/Learning Objectives

What you’ll learn to do by the end of this course:

  • Combine type and image into effective communication

  • Summarize the principles of design that guide the form and function for the printed page

  • Understand designing consistently across different media

  • Provide supporting examples of work as inspiration to the design work

  • Speak critically of ones’ own creative work and the work of others

  • Understand best practices in communication design

  • Apply artistic direction from oneself and from peers

  • Objectively articulate design decisions to professor and peers during critique

  • Interpret the design decisions / point-of-view of others


What you’ll learn to do by the end of this discipline:

  • Use industry standard vector, raster, and layout software tools to produce graphic design for print and digital media.

  • Apply the design process (define problem, define audience, research and gather ideas, create form, evaluate and assess, produce and explain final solution) in the production of graphic design for print and digital media.

  • Select appropriate color, typefaces, layouts and concepts to produce graphic design for print and digital media.

  • Produce designs, concepts and layouts based on current industry standards for print and digital media.
