Course Requirements

This course is presented in a face-to-face delivery method with required classroom participation, group projects, and written assignments.

In-class Participation

Students will attend weekly  on-site discussions throughout the semester session, and an additional 8-hour seminar session. These classroom activities and discussions will allow for active peer-to-peer discussion of health promotion topics, current evidence-based practice relevant to the area of health promotion, and create scholarly inquiry. Refer to course schedule for in-class dates.

Written Assignments

Written Assignments are required.  Submit written assignment(s) discussing a concept of health promotion.  The weekly assignment demonstrates the student’s ability to synthesize health promotion concepts across the lifespan and/or a reflection(s) related to concepts. All written work must contain the student’s original thoughts and comprehension, and include proper citation for any resources or references utilized to formulate the narrative.

Course topics as outlined in the Course Schedule.

Course topic materials provided in each Module Folder in the course content tab.

Individual Health Promotion Plan

Students will create an individual health promotion plan for a person of their choice. This individual plan will discuss elements significant to health promotion, including but not limited to, anthropometrics, health status with the presence or absence of comorbidities, individual learning needs, and development of age-specific and age-appropriate objectives and interventions. (Rubric provided)

Family Genome

Students will complete a genome to identify and highlight family structure using both paternal and maternal heritage.  Each student will provide a summary of the findings and cite statistical data directly related to any comorbidities (i.e. Incidence and prevalence), any emerging patterns within the genome, and evidence-based findings in support of lifestyle changes for the student.

Health Promotion Plan

Students in groups of no more than five (5) will collaborate to identify, develop, and present a health promotion plan addressing a health issue in the Travis County and surrounding area in a specific population.  Each group will develop a plan on an individual target group.  Assigned course faculty must approve each group’s proposed target group prior to students developing the plan.
