Course Requirements


!                    Students will analyze visual information in terms of proportional relationships, spatial relationships and basic geometric shapes in order to accurately depict objects and groupings of objects.

!                    Students will use shading (continuous tones, cross contour, cross hatching and stippling) to create the illusion of volume, depth, and the natural way light describes form.

!                    Students will describe texture and organic rhythms drawing from still life objects and landscape.

!                    Students will execute one and two point perspective drawings.

!                    Students will use a variety of tools and techniques spontaneously to interpret subjects in particular expressive ways.

!                    Students will discuss drawing using a commonly understood terminology.

!                    Students will make drawings from the human figure to depict anatomical relationships.

!                    Students will present their completed work in a professional manner.


This course is designed as a 16 week basic studio experience in drawing B you will be required to complete a series of graduated exercises that will help you acquire the basic skills of good draftsmanship and composition. Exercises in value drawing, linear perspective, cross contour drawing, rendering, composing, and chiaroscuro will be accomplished this semester.

!                    Compile a portfolio of all drawing work in the order of its completion. Each drawing must have the artist's name, date, the objective or purpose of its execution written on the back in the top left hand corner.

!                    Learn to cut a mat and mount drawings for exhibition.

!                    A sketch book is required. SKETCH BOOKS: I should see your sketchbook, (sketches, outside of class, drawn from observation) from each student at least 10 times during the semester. Sketch books are pass/fail. Each missing  Asketch books@ will reduce your final grade by ½ point.

!                    The student must demonstrate that he/she can keep drawings clean, unwrinkled and intact.

!                    Outside assignment during the semester.  The assignment will count 25% of your final grade. Each student will complete 40 (Forty) drawings of four vegetables. The forty drawings must ALL be of the same four vegetables. All four vegetables in each drawing. This project is due BEFORE the last class day.

!        Pop quizzes. The pop quizzes will not count unless you wish to use them to raise your grade.  All pop quizzes together can count no more than 5% of your total final grade.




Newsprint pad, 100 pages, 18@ x 24@, larger is good

Heavyweight paper (for example, Bristol, 90 lb. hot press Fabriano, Arches, charcoal, Aquarelle, or Canson)

ASketch book@, portable size

Masking tape and/or Artist=s tape

Vine charcoal, several sticks small and jumbo size

Compressed charcoal, several sticks

Several SOFT graphite pencils (Ebony, 6B, 4B, woodless)

Kneaded eraser

Two (2) other erasers; pink, magic rub, gum

Hand pencil sharpener

Some kind of plastic cup for water/ink

Conte crayons (black, sanguine, white)

Lithographic crayons, 2 or 3(China markers)

3 color crayons (soft pastel or oil pastel)

India ink

Soft watercolor brush (bamboo ink brushes are good)

Staff and several nibs

Mat knife and blades (OR Exacto knife)

Text: (recommended, not required) DRAWING, A Contemporary Approach by Claudia Betti and Teel Sale. Art Supplies are REQUIRED by 4th week of classes. This list is a minimum.

Course Subjects


Week 1: Introduction to Drawing, Preinstruction drawings, Reasons for Drawing. Discussion of brain function and processing. Upside down drawing. Symbols in your history. Blind contour drawing. Make a Awindow. Read over Guide A, AMaterials@. Supplies: pencils, erasers, large drawing pad, mat knife, ruler, cardboard.

Week 2: Skills of perception required to draw from the natural world. Blind contour drawing, contour and cross contour drawing. In text look at Chapter Five. Supplies: windows, pencils, erasers, soft charcoal, lithographic crayon, conte, graphite, masking tape, large drawing pad.

Week 3: Blind contour drawing. Skills of perception required to draw from the natural world. Seeing the shape of positive/negative. See Chapter Three in text. Supplies: windows, pencils, erasers, soft charcoal, graphite sticks, masking tape. ART SUPPLY INSPECTION.

Week 4: Blind contour drawing. Relationships, proportion, and Aseeing@ perspective. ASighting@ and perspective. Drawing hallways, corners of the room. Make a 3-D drawing. Anti-perspective. In text, see chapter 7. Supplies: windows, pencils, graphite sticks, erasers, ruler, soft and compressed charcoal, large drawing pad, masking tape. ART SUPPLY INSPECTION

Week 5: Blind contour drawing. AValue@ to help to describe illusion(s). In text see chapter 5.  Not believing what you see. Stick & Ink drawing. Drawing to describe form in space. Measuring. Some guidelines. Supplies: ink, brush, large drawing pad,  pencils, erasers, soft charcoal, large drawing pad. Group critique.

Week 6: Gesture drawing.  MODEL. Value of light and dark. Chapter Four in text. Supplies: pencils, erasers, soft charcoal, large drawing pad,  paper, masking tape.

Week 7: Blind contour drawing. Seeing Aplanes@, frottage. Chapter Three.  Supplies: pencils, erasers, conte,  heavyweight paper, soft and compressed charcoal, large drawing pad.

Week 8: Blind contour drawing. Building darks. Overlay drawing (four in one). Supplies: pencils, erasers, soft charcoal, graphite, large drawing pad, masking tape. Private Critiques. Mid-term. Twenty (20) Drawings.



 Week 9: Blind contour drawings. Private critiques continue if needed, Ink wash drawings incorporating background. Invented drawings. Supplies: pencils, erasers, soft charcoal, brush, ink, heavy paper, large drawing pad, masking tape. Group critique.

Week 10: Blind contour drawings. Focus on Aerasing out@ shape of light, developing value for expressive possibilities Supplies: pencils, graphite, erasers, soft charcoal, large drawing pad, masking tape.

Week 11: Blind contour drawings. Challenge and play with your art supplies. Supplies: lithographic crayon plus other waxy or oily crayons, glue, Afrottage plates@, pencils, graphite, erasers, charcoals, brush, ink, large drawing pad, masking tape.

Week 12:Gesture drawing. MODEL and drapery drawn in optional media(student=s choice). Group critique.

Week 13: Blind contour drawings. How to mat a drawing. Pencil, erasers, (drawing supplies) mat knife, ruler, mat board, heavy cardboard, masking tape.

Week 14: Blind contour drawings. Planar drawings and ambiguous space. Supplies: pencils, graphite, erasers, charcoals, brush, ink, large drawing pad, masking tape.

Week 15: No new concepts this week. You may use this time to work on your portfolio.  Fill in weak areas.  Group Critique.

Week 16: Final portfolios due. Projects due. Clean up day
