Course Requirements

Course Description:

This course offers advanced students the opportunity to learn techniques of hardwood furniture construction and component design. They will also gain insight into tuning and maintaining machinery to accomplish fine work. Students will each build a side table with a dovetailed drawer and bottom shelf using material of their choice. Instruction will be provided for what material to buy for the course. Students are required to purchase their own material.

Instructional Methodology:

The class is hands on experience with instructional demonstration of technique and set ups.

Course Objective:

At the finish of the course students should:

  • Understand the basics of material selection for fine furniture

  • Understand wood movement and design basics for solid wood

  • Understand the importance of sequencing in construction & sanding

  • Understand drawer construction, fitting, and drawer finish

  • Understand the role of machine maintenance in finishing

  • Understand the role of sanding in finishing

In addition they should be able to:

  • Construct a cabinet with a drawer that is properly fit

Tools:

Students will be required to have the following tools.

  1. Pencil (all classes)

  2. Tape measure (something light and easy to carry such as 1/2" x 12') (needed by class #2)

  3. Square

  4. 3/8" Chisel (needed by class #7)

  5. Sanding Block (needed by class #8)

Grading:

Students will be graded on the following criteria:

  • Safe and proper tool use

  • Attention to instruction and active involvement

  • Willingness to try the task at hand and innovate where needed

  • Class attendance

  • The quality of your work will count for 10% of your grade

Attendance:

Instructor notification is required for absences. Furniture construction is a sequencial operation requiring different set-ups to accoplish specific tasks. Students should attend all classes to complete the course.

Grade of "I"

(Incomplete)- students may receive a grade of "I" if the student has no unexcused abseces and has completed 75% of the required work. Students should meet with instructor to request an Incomplete.

Grade of "W"

(withdrawal)-when a student is unable to complete the course and does not qualify for a grade of "I", the student should consider withdrawing from the course. It is the students responsibility to initiate withdrawal procedures. Do not rely on the instructor to perform this service for you.

Readings

 No Text is required for this course. Students will receive a folder containing weekly instruction and descriptions of the work covered in each class.

Course Subjects

The project for this course is a side table with one drawer and a bottom shelf (26" tall x 22" wide x 18" deep).  Students are responsible for purchasing the material for the project. Instruction for the purchase of material will be provided in the first class. Material cost can run from $60.00 to $140.00 depending on material chosen.

*all sizes are listed rough for selecting at the lumber yard only. The roughed out part is smaller.

5/4: Need: approx 7 board feet (this may be purchased as 6/4 for convenience or 4/4)

  1. Top, quantity (1) 19” x 23” (flat sawn) (4.25bd ft)

  2. drawer runners, quantity (4) 3” x 15” (2bd ft)

  3. bottom side rails, quantity (2) 1 ½ x 18 (.6bd ft)

 

Examples (pick only one of these three!)

1 board, 8 ½”Wide x 8’ long = 7 bd ft

1 board, 6 ¾” Wide x 10’ long = 7 bd ft

2 boards, 5 ¼” wide x 8’ long = 8 bd ft

  2. Front and back lower rails,: quantity (2) 1 9/16” x 21 1/2” (1bd ft)

  3. Front and back upper rails: quantity (2) 1” x 20” (.5bd ft)

  4. Legs, quantity (4) 2” x 26” (rift grain) (2.5bd ft)

  5. drawer fronts, quantity (1) 4 1/4” x 19” (will be resawn) (1bd ft)

  6. drawer sides quantity (1) 4 1/4” x 17” (rift or quarter grain) (will be resawn) (1bd ft)

  7. Bottom Slats (2) 2 ½ x 21 (will be resawn)

Example: 1 board, 6 ½ “W x 12’ long (can be cut at 6’ giving you two 6’ boards to transport)
