Course Requirements

 

Speeches

  • There are two graded speaking assignments, as described on page 3 of this Syllabus.
  •  Each student will receive an individual written evaluation form for each speaking assignment.  There may also be general class discussion of speaking assignments.

2.  Students must be present at the two required class meetings to present their speaking assignments.

3.  Students must attend the entire class meeting in order to be an audience member for other students’ presentations.  Students who are not present for the entire class meeting will have their grade for the assignment lowered by ten (10) points.

4. The following grade scale is used for the speaking assignments:

Employment Interview and Speech to Inform

90 – 100            A

80  - 89            B

70  - 79            C

60  - 69            D

below 60            F

  • Employment Interview  Objectives:  to practice effective communication behaviors needed in an employment interview context; to practice effective listening skills and nonverbal skills

1.  students work in pairs to present two interviews; partners will be assigned at the first class meeting

2.  each student will participate as interviewer and as interviewee; student grade is based on presentation

as interviewee, interviewer participation is in support of partner and to practice listening and nonverbal

communication skills

3.  choose a real position, with a real company,  related to your major and career goals

4.  prepare a formal interview script of questions and answers in advance

5.  provide two copies of script, to professor and partner, at first class meeting, computer generated

6.  provide one copy of one-page resume, computer generated,  to professor at first class meeting

7.  time limit is 7 - 8 minutes

  • Speech to Inform  Objectives:  to inform your audience about a topic of interest, through description, demonstration, or explanation; to organize information effectively; to develop research and citation skills

1. choose an informative topic of interest to a college-level audience; topic must be reviewed in advance by professor, in order to ensure that it is correct for the assignment, that is, informative not persuasive

2.  prepare one copy of complete sentence outline, computer-generated and submitted at second class meeting

3.  prepare one copy of bibliography with minimum of three references, computer generated and submitted at second class meeting

4.  all three sources in bibliography must be referred to during the speech

5.  use extemporaneous method of delivery -  three  - four 3 x 5 note cards allowed

6.  audio-visual aids are encouraged

7.  time limit is 5 - 6 minutes

  • Requirements for Written Work

1.  All written work must be computer-generated.

2. Type your name and date in the upper corner of the first page.

3.  Do not use binders, folders, or covers.

4.  Use 1” margins and a standard 12 point font.

5.  Staple or clip together multiple pages.

6.  Proofreadyour work before submitting it.

Exams

  • There are two written tests, covering assigned textbook chapters. 
  • The tests are objective, and include multiple-choice and true-false questions.
  • The tests require memorization and recall of specific factual information.
  • Students may take each test only once; there is no opportunity for a make-up test.  Students should read and study the assigned chapters carefully before taking each test.
  •  Tests must be completed in the ACC Testing Centers on a secure ACC computer, and tests are graded in the Testing Centers. 
  • Students must bring identification to the centers to take the tests.

Tests must be completed by the due dates shown on the Assignment Schedule of this Syllabus.

Tests may be completed before the due date, but not after.

        Review Sheets for Test 1 and Test 2 are posted on Blackboard under Assignments.

  • The number of points possible for each assignment is as follows:

1.  To understand the communication process and characteristics of communication competence.

5.  To evaluate listening habits and practice effective listening skills.
