Course Requirements:

1. The student is expected to participate in clinical activities and to have done previous preparation so that learning activities may be more effective.

2. Assignments are to be handed in when due unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Late assignments or incomplete assignments can lead to being conferenced and / or probation.

3. Attendance in clinical is MANDATORY. NO EXCUSED CLINICAL ABSENCES WIL BE GRANTED. There are no clinical absences allowed. Should an emergency occur which results in a clinical absence, the clinical instructor will provide an assignment which will assist the student in meeting their learning objectives. Most of these will be in the clinical / hospital setting.

4. If a student misses any clinical time, the student will be conferenced. If a student misses more than 9 hours of clinical time, he/she will be placed on clinical probation. In addition, the student must petition the Admissions committee requesting to remain in the course. Further absences may result in withdrawal from the course.

5. The student must meet all the course objectives. Should absences occur which do not allow for full evaluation (quality and consistency) of student performance, faculty will be unable to assign a passing grade.

6. Instructor initiated withdrawal may result anytime that the student does not meet the requirements of the course.

7. The student must notify his/ her clinical instructor of a clinical absence prior to the scheduled clinical experience. The student must notify the instructor everyday she/ he is absent. Failure to notify the instructor will result in probation. Instructor initiated withdrawal may result if situation occurs a second time.

8. The student must notify his/ her instructor if they are going to be tardy for the clinical experience. Failure to do so may result in conference and / or probation.

9. All students are required to present their current CPR card (course C) prior to entering clinical at the beginning of the semester. It must remain in effect throughout the semester. If CPR is not current, the student will not be allowed in clinical. Since there are no absences from clinical, the student will be conferenced and must make up the clinical.

10. All students must present validation of all health-related testing (including but not limited to tuberculosis testing) to their clinical instructor at the beginning of the semester.

11. Active participation in clinical experience is a required component of the nursing program in order to achieve the knowledge skills and attitudes necessary to function in the profession.

12. All students will be required to complete a “Special Project for Mental Health Nursing” prior to the end of the semester. Specific criteria for this experience will be assigned early in the semester.

Evaluation and Grading:

All clinical objectives must be met satisfactorily for completion / passing of the course.

The clinical will be graded as a “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory” based upon:

1. Attendance in all clinical experience as scheduled.

2. Appropriate preparation prior to clinical in order to carry out all clinical experiences. Students who are not adequately prepared, i.e. do not have a written nursing process, or other written assignments, cannot assess and plan, or cannot safely perform skills taught to date, will not be allowed to care for the client and will be conferenced and may be sent home from the clinical experience. This will be deemed as a clinical absence and conference and probation may result.

3. All written / oral assignments completed satisfactorily and turned in on time designated by the clinical instructor. Unsatisfactory work must be corrected and resubmitted at the time designated by the faculty.

4. Utilization of the clinical focus to guide their learning in the clinical area. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the clinical focus and to participate in the identified learning activities.

5. Maintaining safety for the client. Safety of the client is of primary concern of the ADN faculty. Therefore, any student who jeopardizes the safety of a client will be conferenced and / or placed on probation or withdrawn from the program.

Evaluation of clinical performance by the student and faculty. At the end of each rotation there will be scheduled evaluation conferences with student and clinical instructor. The student must complete the self-evaluation of clinical objectives prior to the conference. Other conferences may be scheduled at the request of either student or facult
