General Statement of Job

To establish and maintain an equity-minded and student success-focused teaching, learning, and working environment where faculty, staff, and students are appropriately served within available resources on a college wide basis; to provide strategic and data-informed instructional leadership; to ensure the effective administration of assigned disciplines; and to promote innovative and intentional instructional goals and objectives conducive to student success. To provide oversight and support of assigned programs in Liberal Arts - Social and Behavioral Sciences dean area (Anthropology/Archaeology, Economics, General Studies & Student Development, Geography, Government, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Psychology, and Sociology).  To work collaboratively with the Dean of Liberal Arts - Humanities & Communications in support of strategic, programmatic, and operational consistency in the Liberal Arts Area of Study.

Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Essential Job Functions: Provides equity-minded leadership in developing, implementing, and maintaining curriculum and programs that respond to community needs, prepare all students for success, reflect high standards and best practices in program delivery, and meet the external requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), and applicable specialized accrediting organizations.
  2. Student/Faculty Issues: Provides leadership in addressing and resolving student complaints, grade appeals, academic dishonesty appeals, faculty complaints and grievances, employee complaints against supervisor, or other student, staff, or faculty issues, where appropriate.
  3. Management: Supports the selection of department chairs who will engage in future-focused and innovative leadership of their departments.  Supervises and evaluates department chairs and assistant deans.  Ensures consistent and appropriate application of administrative rules within assigned academic areas, including overseeing robust faculty evaluation processes, hiring of equity-minded and diverse faculty and staff, strategic course schedule development, strategic planning and budgeting, safety, facilities, equipment and software needs, and preparation of reports as required. Hires, supervises, and evaluates support staff. Initiates and manages special projects and assignments. Participates in shared governance through service on college wide councils and committees.
  4. Curriculum/Instruction: Provides equity-minded and data-informed leadership and advocacy in the planning, implementing, assessing and ongoing improvement of all curriculum, instructional modalities, courses, and programs within assigned academic areas. Ensures that all faculty within assigned academic areas are appropriately qualified and meet ongoing professional development standards. Ensures that programs comply with college standards, regulatory requirements and/or accreditation standards where appropriate, and reflect best practices in teaching and learning. Convenes advisory committees as needed, works with Grants Development Office, and maintains community, university, and school district partnerships in support of programmatic goals.
  5. Dual Credit:  Provides strategic leadership, oversight, and data-informed support for dual credit programs, faculty and students, including Early College High Schools and dual enrollment programs across the ACC District.  Partners with area independent school districts and ACC's Office of College & High School Relations in support of excellence in dual credit instruction.
  6. Area of Study: Provides leadership and advocacy for the assigned area of study jointly with the Dean of Liberal Arts - Humanities & Communications, including strategic planning, communication, robust student and faculty engagement, joint efforts of instruction and student affairs to support student success, and community-building with external partners where appropriate.
