General Statement of Job

Works with the Director of College Communications to develop and execute public relations initiatives to strengthen ACC's presence among  local, state, and national media and within the community. Under general supervision, assists in coordination of the college's external communications strategies, media, and multicultural relations activities including storytelling, news reporting, and media relations in support of the college's mission to reach and engage with culturally diverse audiences.

Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Plans, coordinates, and implements effective external communications and public relations strategies designed to keep the public informed of the programs and achievements of the college.
  2. Builds and executes media strategies that align with the college's priorities and goals.
  3. Writes and edits external communications and website content including media advisories, news releases, feature stories, publications, and other storytelling opportunities for news media and target audiences including multicultural communities.
  4. Identifies newsworthy topics, conducts appropriate research, develops supporting materials and content, targets appropriate media outlet and/or journalists, and pitches stories to generate coverage.
  5. Serves as managing editor of the college's online newsroom.
  6. Creates, maintains, and distributes news editorial calendar.
  7. Cultivates expert sources within the college to help promote the faculty, staff, and programs. Plans, develops, and executes an effective media program to generate and maintain a strong local, regional, state, and national public presence for the college.
  8. Receives, investigates, and answers questions from external media and public, and, at the direction of the Director of College Communications, serves as a liaison to English/Spanish media outlets.
  9. Serves as a point person with the community news outlets on a daily basis, coordinating media opportunities, and advises faculty and staff on how to prepare for interviews.
  10. Collaborates with others to build and cultivate multicultural community engagement, to maintain an expert speakers bureau for media and community outreach.
  11. Compiles reports related to media outreach efforts.
  12. Designs and maintains media databases (regional, state, national, and niche).
  13. Develops strong relationships with local and national media to keep ACC top of mind with the editorial community and drive media coverage.
  14. Provides media event coordination including the coordination of media access to campuses and media management for special events. Represents the organization at various promotional events and business/community meetings.
  15. Provides assistance in development and execution of emergency communications.
  16. Provides support for marketing event planning.
